MantaRay

Smart Charge Point Communications Controller

A compact communications controller board that manages every aspect of a charge point - connectivity, authentication, metering, load balancing and protocol compliance - for both AC and DC chargers, new or existing.

Overview

One board to control your charge point

MantaRay manages your charging station using the Open Charge Alliance protocols for maximum compatibility. Use it to run AC and DC charge points with OCPP and your own back-office solution - either integrated into your existing systems or as the core of a bespoke charger built from Versinetic's charging modules.

Versinetic engineers have been producing charging systems for over a decade, including a fully integrated V2G system. MantaRay is the culmination of that experience: an adaptable, powerful board that provides reliable control over payment, authorisation, load balancing and more, with multiple charging sockets per board.

Feature overview

  • Compact single-board computer for new and existing EV chargers
  • One MantaRay can control multiple EEL AC controllers
  • Communicates with any back office using OCPP 1.6 and 2.0 (2.0.1-ready)
  • Works with both AC and DC chargers
  • Remotely controlled and diagnosed via a web interface
  • Flexible communications including LTE-CAT M1 - future-proofed against the 2G shutdown
  • Supports displays from 2.7″ to 10″

MantaRay in action

Intelligent control of the charging cycle

MantaRay instructs the charger when and at what rate to charge - or discharge, with supporting DC chargers. It handles identification and authorisation, connects to RFID readers, and communicates directly with the CSMS or a Building Energy Management System for local load balancing without a round trip to the cloud.

Back-office connectivity

Speaks OCPP to any compatible CSMS for remote control, diagnostics and billing, with buffering that survives connectivity interruptions.

Local load balancing

Talks directly to a BEMS for low-latency local control - ideal for DC chargers with bi-directional power transfer balancing the supply network.

Solar & net-zero modes

Make the most of a solar PV installation by redirecting excess energy to the vehicle instead of exporting it back to the grid.

How it fits together

System architecture

One MantaRay board sits at the heart of the charge point - linking chargers, payment, display and back office over whichever wired or wireless communications suit your product.

Software use cases

Configurable features, switched on for your charger

MantaRay's software features can be enabled programmatically to fit each charger's use case - from authentication and remote diagnostics to multi-connector support and bespoke onboard applications.

Web configurator

Browser-based interface to configure the charger unit directly.

OCPP

Compliant with OCPP 1.6J, with 2.0.1 support on the roadmap.

ISO 15118

Plug & Charge and V2G-ready communications support on the roadmap.

Load management

Site balancing and net-zero modes - charge around household load and stop export to the grid.

Security

Secure boot, encrypted comms and firmware updates, and penetration-tested.

Custom firmware

Bridge to MQTT or Modbus, integrate with a HEMS, or add bespoke onboard applications.

Why MantaRay

Built to accelerate your charger to market

01

Reduces development time, cost and risk

MantaRay works with both AC charge points and DC chargers, giving you one proven controller across your range instead of separate development efforts.

02

Open standards for optimum flexibility

Built on OCPP - a non-proprietary protocol that works with any supporting Charging Station Management System (CSMS) or back office.

03

Adaptable connectivity and functionality

Controls charge rate over wired and wireless communications of your choice. Extend features with the wider charging module ecosystem.

04

Robust authentication

Supports all common methods of secure authentication, including RFID readers for identification and authorisation.

05

Future-proofed communications

A smart charge point is defined by its ability to communicate. LTE-CAT M1 insures your product against the 2G shutdown.

06

Local, low-latency control

Talks directly to a BEMS without going through the cloud - critical for fast load balancing and bi-directional DC power transfer.
