ISO 15118 Stack

Plug & Charge and Vehicle-to-Grid communications

A software stack that implements the ISO 15118 protocol so your chargers can talk to vehicles the way the future of charging demands - enabling seamless Plug & Charge and bi-directional Vehicle-to-Grid support across AC and DC hardware.

Overview

The communications standard behind seamless charging

Developed jointly by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), ISO 15118 defines how a vehicle and a charging station communicate and what information they exchange. Chargers that meet the protocol deliver drive-up, plug-and-charge functionality for EV drivers.

Versinetic's ISO 15118 software stack gives charge point manufacturers a forward-thinking route to that experience. It overcomes the limitations of earlier protocols - particularly the lack of rich information about the charging vehicle - and adds support for bi-directional Vehicle-to-Grid charging, helping to ease potential load problems on the electricity network.

What the stack delivers

  • Seamless, effortless Plug & Charge for end users
  • Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) bi-directional charging support
  • Secure, information-rich vehicle-to-charger communication
  • Works with both standard AC and fast DC chargers
  • Greater interoperability across charging networks
  • Supplied as a licensed charging module

Plug & Charge and V2G

Two capabilities that change how chargers work

ISO 15118 replaces the need for multiple apps, cards or memberships with automatic, authenticated communication between the vehicle and the charge point - and it opens the door to sending energy back to the grid when it is needed most.

Plug & Charge simplicity

The vehicle and charger authenticate each other automatically over the cable. Drivers plug in and charging begins - offering a genuinely seamless experience with no apps, cards or memberships to manage. The need to juggle multiple accounts to charge at public posts becomes a thing of the past.

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)

Bi-directional charging lets energy flow back from the vehicle to the grid. As more EVs join the network, V2G helps alleviate potential load problems and coupled draws on power - from buildings and street infrastructure - turning parked vehicles into a flexible energy resource.

Capabilities

What the ISO 15118 stack brings to your charger

A single communications layer that handles secure vehicle identification, authorisation, energy negotiation and bi-directional transfer - designed to sit across your AC and DC hardware.

Plug & Charge

The vehicle and charge point identify and authorise each other automatically over the charging cable. The driver simply plugs in and charging begins - no apps, no RFID cards, no memberships.

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)

Support for bi-directional charging lets energy flow back from the vehicle to the grid, helping to smooth demand peaks and ease load on constrained electrical infrastructure.

Secure communications

ISO 15118 defines a rich, authenticated data exchange between vehicle and charger - replacing the limited signalling of earlier protocols with secure, information-rich messaging.

AC and DC coverage

Whether your product is a standard AC unit or a high-power DC fast charger, the stack is designed to sit across your range rather than forcing a separate development effort per product.

Grid-aware charging

Richer information about the connected vehicle and its energy needs opens the door to smarter scheduling - charging around building and street demand instead of adding to the peak.

Interoperability

Built to the international standard so your chargers speak the same language as the wider network - increasing convenience for drivers and lowering barriers to EV adoption.

Standards & integration

Built to the standard, ready to integrate

The stack is supplied as a licensed product within Versinetic's range of charging modules - the product and service modules that can be configured to meet each customer's requirements and combined into a complete EV charge point solution.

It is designed to be augmented with modular hardware to extend Versinetic's existing charging solutions, and it pairs naturally with the OCPP library so back-office and vehicle communications work together in one platform. Adopting ISO 15118 is part of Versinetic's roadmap to help charge point providers reduce time to market and future-proof their products.

OCPP

Pairs with the Versinetic OCPP library so back-office communications and vehicle communications work together in one charger platform.

Why ISO 15118

A cornerstone of the future of EV charging

01

Future-proof your charging platform

ISO 15118 is set to become the backbone of public and private charging. Building it in now means your chargers meet the direction of travel rather than needing a costly retrofit later.

02

A seamless experience for drivers

Plug & Charge removes the friction of apps, cards and memberships - giving your end users a genuine drive-up, plug-in, walk-away experience.

03

Protect the grid, unlock V2G

Bi-directional charging helps alleviate infrastructure load and turns fleets and forecourts into flexible energy assets rather than pure demand.

04

One stack across your range

Designed for both AC and DC chargers so you can standardise on a single communications layer instead of maintaining separate implementations.

05

Standards-based, not proprietary

The stack implements the open ISO/IEC standard, keeping your products interoperable with the growing ecosystem of vehicles and networks.

06

Backed by real-world V2G experience

Versinetic engineers have built charging systems for over a decade, including a fully integrated V2G system - hard-won experience that goes into the stack.
