The right setup depends on the site, not the charger. An apartment block needs load management across many bays sharing one supply. A fleet depot needs chargers that hand vehicles back on a schedule, often overnight, often unattended. What changes:
- the load balancing approach, since a shared supply behaves differently in a car park than in a depot,
- the duty cycle and diagnostic demands on the hardware, since public units run harder for longer and need to report faults without an engineer on site,
- and the software layer, since fleet software needs scheduling, public networks need uptime reporting and payment, and residential needs neither.

How do I know which of these three applies to my site?
Start with who's charging and when. If it's residents on their own schedule sharing one supply, that's apartment and residential. If it's a fleet returning on a schedule you control, that's a depot. If it's the public, unattended, that's a public network. Mixed sites happen; tell an engineer what's on site and they'll tell you which parts of the range apply.
Can one installation combine more than one of these?
Yes. A depot with a small public bay, or a residential block with a handful of visitor spaces, both happen. The load balancing has to account for every charger drawing from the same supply regardless of which category it falls into, so this is exactly the kind of detail worth raising with an engineer before a design is fixed.
Does the hardware differ between applications, or just the setup?
Mostly the setup and the software, but not entirely. Public hardware has to survive far more charging sessions per unit and report faults on its own, since there's rarely an engineer nearby when something goes wrong. Depots lean on scheduling rather than duty cycle. Residential leans on load balancing across many low power connections. The underlying controllers are shared across the range, what changes is how hard each one has to work and how much it needs to report back.
What information do I need before contacting an engineer?
Supply capacity for the site and a rough charger count get you a first answer. Anything beyond that, existing switchgear, whether it's new build or retrofit, helps but isn't required to start the conversation.
